As an Executive Coach, I believe play is essential for our development and wellbeing. Leaders are no exception. As we mature and take on more responsibilities, and the demands become more intense, we risk losing sight of what we need to maintain our physical and mental health. Burnout, disengaged in relationships, feeling stuck and overwhelmed become ways of being that create roadblocks for further growth.
All work and no play not only dulls us but also leaves us tired, anxious, and less effective. If the opposite of work is play, what does playtime look like for you? Freedom, no accountability, stress free? Think about how you would describe it
That's why, as we strive for our next level of success, creating space for play is imperative. Without it, our goals and plans risk becoming overwhelming and uninspiring tasks.
As an Executive Coach, I believe strategies and plans for growth must incorporate “playtime” as each individual defines it for themselves.
Personally, I find playtime through sports and travel. Whether it's early morning runs, long bike rides, or a round of golf, these activities restore my energy, create mental space for creativity and reduce stress levels.
When I ride my bike, I feel liberated. Nature embraces me, and I surpass mental and physical barriers, discovering new levels of potential. Similarly, on the golf course, I find solace from the noise of the outside world. As a beginner, I'm reminded of the fundamentals of growth and the value of embracing new challenges.
Even a simple hike with my dogs brings me immense joy and helps me appreciate the small moments amidst a busy schedule. As an Executive Coach, I encourage my clients to explore how play fits into their plans, recognizing its profound impact on their professional and personal growth."
